Zakynthos
Zakynthos is located in the base of the Eptanese complex. The Western half of the island is mountainous with steep cliffs along its coast while the eastern half are fertile plains, which merge into turquoise water bays and golden beaches. The capital of the island is the town of Zakynthos also called Chora. In the capital you can visit the various museums, the Venetian Castle which is watching the town on the hill above, and on the waterfront, the churches of Agios Dionysios, the island’s patron saint and the 17th c Byzantine belfry in the church of Agios Nikolaos. Besides the historical monuments, Zakynthos is an organized tourist center where its accommodation, restaurants and nightlife will satisfy even the most demanding visitor.

Chora
The town of Zakynthos extends in a semi-circle, between the Castle hill and the sea. The town of Zakynthos (or Chora) was built upon the ruins of the old town, which was razed by the devastating earthquake of 1953. The new town has attempted to retain the style of the old buildings. In Solomos Square a wide-open space facing the sea, surrounded by magnificent buildings such as the Byzantine Museum, and the Municipal Library. In the center of the square stands the statue of Dionysios Solomos, the writer of the Greek National Anthem. The Strata Marina St. starts in Solomos Square and runs as far as the church of Agios Dionysios. It is the town’s busiest street during summer with plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops of every kind Another historic square is the one of St. Markos here the Catholic Church of St. Markos and the museum dedicated to Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians are situated. It’s also worth visiting the church of Our Lady "Faneromeni" and the church of Our Lady of the Angels.

Byzantine Museum
The Museum is situated in Solomou square, in Zakynthos town. Exhibits contains an excellent collection of icons from the Byzantine era to the 19th century, wall paintings of 12th-13th and 17th-18th centuries, sculptural works of the Helenistic, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods, works in wood and wood carved iconastases from the 16th-19th centuries. The museum of Kalvos, Solomos and eminent Zakynthians The museum contains an important number of Solomos’ manuscripts and personal belongings the mausoleums of the two great Zakynthian poets and a rich collection of portraits of eminent Zakynthians

The Venetian Castle
The Venetian Castle is situated at the district of Bohali 2km from Zakynthos town. The castle with its huge stones, the towers and cannons was used to protect the old city of Zakynthos. Today only the gate, outer walls and battlements still stand. Above the entrance gate the Venetian blazon of St.Markos lions can be seen. The area is covered with pines and offers an amazing view of the port and the town.

Churches
Agios Dionysios
As you approach the port the first thing that you see is the lofty bell tower of Agios Dionysios, the patron saint of the island. The church dedicated to Saint Dionysios is situated in the front street of Zakynthos town; it was built in 1708 and was reconditioned in 1764. It contains hagiographies created by painters Koutouzis and Doxaras.

Agios Nikolaos on the Mole
Agios Nikolaos church was built in 1561 and is the only Venetian building that survived. It is of great importance since Agios Dionysios served here.

Beaches
Laganas Bay:
Carreta – carreta’s nesting area. Laganas bay is the longest beach in the Mediterranean, with thin sand and shallow water. It offers water sports facilities and also installation for diving and sailing.

Tsilivi:
A long beach with golden sand and crystal clear waters. In Tsilivi water sport facilities are available. On the seashore there are taverns, restaurants and other shops.

Alikes:
A beautiful sandy beach along the northeast coast. In Alikes Main Street, numerous shops, bars and taverns are lined along while for the adventurous there are also water sports facilities.

Argassi:
A sandy beach with many coves lying at the village of the same name. Along the costal road there are bars, discos, restaurants and taverns as well as a collection of shops.

Navagio:
Navagio beach is only accessible by boat. Its sand is white and the water crystal clear. On the beach there is a 20-year old half buried shipwreck.
